The New Way

So now that Will is back in town, I intend to get back to our rigorous standards of recording, editing, and posting.  Steve and I have something of a clash of opinions that goes back as long as we’ve known each other: Steve only wants to let people hear perfectly sculpted and immaculate final pieces, and I just want to let people hear what we’re doing, even if it’s really raw.  To be fair: I think we both overdo it.  I trust people to “hear the idea” even when it’s virtually impossible because of all the various mistakes, and Steve waits so long for perfection that ideas become lost and never seen again.

I intend to post our jams and songs-in-progress as-is (with a little bit of editing / sweetening, but no re-takes) so that we have a comprehensive map and timeline of where we’ve been.

I think this will also be interesting for people following along at home.

A 70’s jam

We didn’t have any particular plan when we started the jam below, but it ended up sounding kind of like a 70’s theme to me.  I’m picturing the hero driving at night, with a shot looking up from the passenger floormat at his sunglasses, reflecting the city lights going by.

I went with Shaft for the album cover, and then because I had a picture available I threw in Tracy Morgan’s face, because I absolutely love Tracy Morgan, and I thought the image of him as Shaft was pretty awesome.

Little Black Someone That I Used To Know Is Watchin’ Me

These songs belong together (Police and Gotye and Rockwell).  Both the Police song and the Gotye song do the same basic thing chordwise… just a full step interval.  And the Rockwell tune’s chorus (“I always feel like, somebody’s watchin’ me”, sung by no less than Michael Jackson) is almost identical to the Gotye melody.

We just have to decide how to cram them together.  Steve and I played around with this a bit and it’s like shotgunning flood in a tunnel.
